Red Raiders Men’s Golf Competes During Fall Season

The Texas Tech University’s Red Raiders Men’s golf team competed in multiple tournaments during their fall season. Collectively, the Red Raiders Men’s golf team had many outstanding moments during their fall season against their competitors on the course. 

The Red Raiders Men’s golf team is currently the No. 9 ranked team in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. Head coach Greg Sands is currently leading them. This is Sand’s 21st season coaching for the program.

Carmel Cup

From September 3 to September 5, the Red Raiders Men’s golf team played in the Carmel Cup, which took place in Pebble Beach, California. As a team, they scored fourth place during the tournament.

Senior Kyle Hogan shot 5-under-par in the final round. He finished with a scorecard of 69-75-69 – 211 and tied for third place individually. Hogan is one of two active members who appeared in the 2019 NCAA Men’s golf tournament. 

Freshman Calum Scott played his first collegiate match and finished at even par. He tied for 20th place in the tournament. Sophomore Baard Skogen shot a 3-under with a birdie on his last hole in the final round. He finished with a scorecard of 73-67-73 – 213. He tied for 10th place in the tournament.

Maridoe Collegiate Invitational

From September 13 to September 15, the Red Raiders played in the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational, which took place in Carrollton, Texas. As a team, they scored fourth place during the tournament.

Skogen gave an outstanding performance by executing 16 birdies and 30 pars during the tournament. He finished in second place individually after losing in a playoff against Arizona State’s Cameron Sisk. 

Junior Garrett Martin tied for 20th place in the tournament. He finished with a scorecard of 77-70-74 – 221 and achieved 12 birdies during the tournament.

Blessings Collegiate

From October 4 to October 6, the Red Raiders played in the Blessings Collegiate, which took place in Fayetteville, Arkansas. As a team, they scored seventh place during the tournament.

Junior Ludvig Aberg performed very well during the tournament and made ninth place individually. He shot 72-71 during the first two rounds and finished 54 holes at 3-under. Scott also played hard, finishing with a scorecard of 74-73-70 – 217.

Big 12 Match Play Tournament

From October 11 to October 13, the Red Raiders played in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament in Hockley, Texas. As a team, they scored second place during the tournament. The Red Raiders Men’s golf team performed extraordinarily well, defeating Oklahoma, the No. 1 ranked team in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. The Red Raiders are ranked No. 10.

After beating Oklahoma, they faced off against No. 5 Texas in the championship round. They lost to Texas, being defeated 3-2-1. This was the second time in program history that they reached the finals during this tournament.

During his match against Oklahoma, Senior Andy Lopez took a 1-UP win. Scott and Aberg both won 4&3 during their matches. Hogan and Skogen tied during their games. These combined scores allowed them to advance to the championship round, where they competed against Texas.

During the championship round against Texas, the Red Raiders Men’s golf team had some notable moments. Hogan secured a 5&4 win against the Longhorns. Scott played fiercely to take a 1-UP win, while Skogen tied against his opponent during his match.

Overview: Red Raiders Men’s Golf

Texas Tech University’s Red Raiders Men’s golf team did well in their first two tournaments of their season. They placed fourth in the Carmel Cup and The Maridoe Collegiate Invitational, seventh in the Blessings Collegiate and second in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament.

There were notable moments from both seasoned and fresh team members, which shows that the team has much more in store for their ongoing season. This will give Red Raider fans much more to anticipate as the Red Raiders Men’s golf team keeps competing. Their next tournament will be at Amer Ari from February 3 to February 5 in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
