LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt will once again be at the forefront of football at a national level as he was named Thursday morning to the Football Development Model Council by USA Football.
The council, aligned with the U.S. Olympic Committee’s American Development Model, intends to guide the formation of the first national application of a long-term development model for the sport. It is compromised of the nation’s top medical and athlete development specialists as well as coaches, former players and commissioners at every level of football.
“I am honored to join the Football Development Model Council,” Hocutt said. “I look forward to working with a distinguished group of individuals in development of the proper model of teaching and expanding this great game to future generations.”
Hocutt is the only sitting athletics director among the 20-person council, which also consists of American Football Coaches Association executive director Todd Berry, NCAA chief medical officer Dr. Brian Hainline, former NFL standout Anquan Boldin and National Federation of State High School Associations executive director Dr. Karissa Niehoff among others.
The council, chaired by Hainline, will focus on taking the Football Development Model previously established by USA Football and expanding it for future generations. The Football Development Model serves as the framework for how football is presented, practiced and coached from youth through adulthood.
Hocutt, a past chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, provides a unique perspective to the council as a former student-athlete at Kansas State and now as a collegiate administrator at Texas Tech. Hocutt has also served as the chairman of the NCAA Division I football recruiting subcommittee and as a Big 12 representative for the NCAA Division I leadership council.
USA Football serves as the sport’s national governing body and partners with leaders in medicine, child advocacy and athletics to support positive football experiences for youth, high school and other amateur players.
