Volleyball Hosts Annual Red Raider Classic Tournament in Lubbock

The TTU volleyball team headed home with a 3-1 record to host the Red Raider Classic Tournament. The team kicked off the tournament against Texas State Friday night. 

TTU vs. Texas State

In their opening match, the Red Raiders defeated the Bobcats in four sets. After losing the first set, the team came back and won all three sets to win. The team won the sets 25-20, 19-25, 17-25, and 17-25. 

Three Red Raiders had double-digit kills, with Junior Kenna Sauer leading the team with a career-best 13 kills. In addition, Junior Caitlin Dugan tallied 11 kills for a .417 hitting clip, and Junior Reagan Cooper had 10 kills with a .421 clip. 

Also, for the Red Raiders, defensively, the team had 11 blocks. Both Sauer and Sophomore Maddie O’Brien led the team with five blocks each. 

Moreover, the Red Raiders’ win over Texas State marked the eighth consecutive home-opening win for head coach Tony Graystone. 

TTU vs. Rhode Island

In the tournament’s second game, the Red Raiders were dominant over Rhode Island, taking all three sets. The team won the sets 13-25, 16-25, and 16-25.

Fifth-year senior Samantha Sanders led the team with eight digs.

Both Junior Caitlin Dugan and Freshman Madison Gilliland tallied seven kills and three blocks each.

Likewise, Graduate Student KJ Adams tied her season-high with 23 digs, and Sophomore Reese Rhodes recorded a season-best of 20 assists. 

TTU vs. Ohio State

In the final game of the Red Raider Classic Tournament, the team fell to No. 6 Ohio State. The team lost the sets 25-14, 25-15, and 25-13.

The Buckeyes held the Red Raiders to only 27 kills out of 93 attempts, with 14 errors. 

While Sanders led the team with eight kills. Cooper similarly, led the team with a .500 hitting clip while also tallying seven kills off 14 attempts. 

Both Reagan Cooper and Caitlin Dugan were named to the All-Tournament team. Dugan led the Red Raiders with 21 kills, nine blocks, and a .373 hitting clip. Likewise, Cooper tallied 17 kills with a .455 clip. Cooper earned her second All-Tournament Team honor.

Following the Red Raider Classic Tournament

The Red Raiders will travel to Greeley, Colorado, for a midweek game against Northern Colorado on Wednesday, September 8. 

Then onto Boulder, Colorado, for the Buffs Invitational. The team will face Colorado Friday, September 10, and San Jose State Saturday, September 11.
