Red Raiders Men’s Tennis Performs in the ITA Texas Regional

The Texas Tech Red Raiders Men’s tennis team performed in the ITA Texas Regional Championships from October 14 to October 17 at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The team consisted of seven athletes who played in various singles and doubles matches to represent the Red Raiders. This tournament provided them an opportunity to highlight their talent as they continued their successful season.

ITA Texas Regional: Singles Matches

On October 14, Reed Collier, Fran Vittar, and Takeyasu Sekiguchi played some singles matches to open Texas Tech’s performance in the tournament. Sekiguchi and Vittar lost, but Collier won.

On October 15, Collier and Vittar entered the main draw singles matches of 64 in the first round, along with Dmitri Azoides, Franco Ribero, Ilgiz Valiev, and Olle Wallin. Collier and Valiev won their games, but Azoides, Ribero, Vittar, and Wallin were defeated. Collier and Vittar advanced to the main draw singles matches of 32, but both lost their games. During the consolation singles matches, Ribero, Vittar, and Wallin competed. Wallin and Ribero won their matches, but Vittar lost. 

On October 16, Ribero entered the singles consolation round of 16 but was defeated after a hard-fought match.

ITA Texas Regional: Doubles Matches

On October 16, the Red Raiders entered the doubles matches in the ITA Texas Regional tournament. The teams that competed were Valiev/Azoides, Collier/Ribero, and Wallin/Vittar. All three entered the main draw doubles matches of 32 and won their games. Subsequently, they advanced to the next round of 16. During the round of 16, Valiev/Azoides and Collier/Ribero won their matches. This victory allowed them to advance to the next round. However, Wallin/Vittar lost.

On October 17, Valiev/Azoides and Collier/Ribero entered the quarterfinal round of the doubles bracket. Both groups played fiercely. However, both lost their matches and were eliminated.

Overview

Over the course of four days, the Texas Tech Red Raiders Men’s tennis team played spectacularly in the ITA Texas Regional championships. The doubles teams of Valiev/Azoides and Collier/Ribero notably performed well after making it to the quarterfinals round. This accomplishment made Texas Tech one of two teams in the region to have two doubles teams in the quarterfinals round.

The rest of the team also performed well in doubles matches, as well as singles. The Red Raiders Men’s tennis team is getting ready to play next at the ITA National Fall Championships, which will take place from November 4 to November 7 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California.
