Joey McGuire Former Associate Head Coach at Baylor Named TTU Football Head Coach

Only weeks after TTU Football dismissed now-former head coach Matt Wells; the program has made another step with Joey McGuire, the new head coach. Many sources leaked the news, and while Texas Tech interviewed many highly qualified coaches, McGuire seems to be a perfect fit for the program.

Joey McGuire History

High School Coaching Career

McGuire has a long history of success in coaching. But prior to doing so, he first earned his bachelor’s degree in 1995 from the University of Texas at Arlington. Shortly after graduating, he returned to his high school alma mater in Crowley, Texas, to begin his coach career. After coaching in Crowley for two seasons, he accepted another job at Cedar Hill. In 1997, he joined one of the most successful programs as a secondary coach. He would stay in this position until 2003 when he was then named head coach.

While Cedar Hill had not had a winning season in some time under McGuire, Cedar Hill turned the program around. From 2013 to 2016, McGuire led the Longhorns to a 141-42 record and made four appearances in the Texas High School State Championships. In those four appearances, Cedar Hill under McGuire would win in 2006, 2013, and 2014.

In 2020, after leaving high school football and advancing his career McGuire was inducted into the High School Coaches Hall of Fame. This recognition is an excellent piece to his resume and establishes his ties in Texas.

College Coaching Career

After a successful start to his career as a high school coach, McGuire would then move up in 2017 as a tight-ends coach from 2017-2018. Still at Baylor, in 2020, he would be promoted to associate head coach and defensive ends coach. Again, after another successful season, he would keep his position as associate head coach and become the outside linebacker’s coach.

Since he has now been named TTU Football’s Head Coach, he will bring a new aspect to Texas Tech. With his experience on the defensive side of things at Baylor and leading several players to the NFL, McGuire brings in that edge that Texas Tech that is much needed.

One of the main things that McGuire is bringing in, along with his experience, is his ability to make relationships. With the ability to make those relationships he has proven to be one of the best recruiters in the state of Texas.

Overall

Overall, Joey McGuire has been named Texas Tech’s new Head Football Coach and will bring a plethora of things to the table. McGuire will start his new position for the Red Raiders immediately and take over shortly after the season ends.

With several other coaches for the Red Raiders on the line, look for many other announcements in the days to weeks to come.
