The Carol of Lights at Texas Tech University

Every year on the Texas Tech campus, the Carol of Lights takes place during the holiday season. The Carol of Lights is an annual ceremony held on the Texas Tech campus, where thousands of Christmas lights are publicly lit on the campus. This year, the Walking in a Winter Raiderland, Carol of Lights will take place on November 30, 2021, at 7:00 P.M.

The event takes place at the Science Quadrangle on the campus. Traditionally, it begins every year with the Texas Tech University Combined Choirs performing various Christmas holiday songs. Afterward, the lighting ceremony begins. At the end of the ceremony, over 25,000 lights are lit onto the campus.

History

The Carol of Lights is an essential staple in Texas Tech tradition. Most importantly, it brings together the community of Texas Tech and Lubbock. In addition to that, it’s also one of the largest and most important events that take place annually on the campus. Most notably, though, the ceremony has a unique history.

It all began in the 1950s when Dr. Gene Hemmle met with some students at Texas Tech. They went to the middle of the campus and sang carols while enjoying some hot chocolate. The university held the first official Carol of Lights ceremony in 1959, with 5,000 lights lit in celebration.

Overview

The Carol of Lights is an essential tradition that celebrates the best things about Texas Tech during the holiday season. Last year, the event was virtual, but this year’s ceremony will be an in-person event and promises to be more outstanding than ever.

The 63rd Annual Carol of Lights will take place at the Science Quadrangle on the Texas Tech campus on November 30, 2021, at 7:00 P.M. Be sure to stop by to enjoy one of Texas Tech’s finest annual traditions! For even more details on the event be sure to head to the main TTU website.
