LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore Jarrett Culver has earned the first Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor of his career after going off for a career-high 30 points on a 12-for-13 shooting performance last Saturday against Abilene Christian.
A Lubbock native, Culver also added seven rebounds and four assists against Abilene Christian after scoring 15 points earlier in the week against Northwestern State. He is the first Red Raider to earn a conference award this season and the 24th in program history. Keenan Evans was a four-time selection last year as a senior for Texas Tech which hadn’t had a weekly award winner since the 2012-13 season.
For the week, Culver averaged 22.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 89.5 percent (17-for-19) from the field and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the free throw line as the Red Raiders improved to 10-0 on the season. Culver has scored in double figures in all 10 games this season and is averaging 19.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game to start his second season. His 30 points against the Wildcats surpassed his previous career-high of 26 points that he accomplished twice – earlier this season against Nebraska at the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City and last season as a freshman at West Virginia.
Culver now has two career conference honors with a newcomer selection last season. He was named to the Jerry West Award Watch List before this season and was also tabbed a Big 12 Preseason Honorable Mention selection.
Dedrick Lawson (Kansas) was named Newcomer of the Week for the second time. Lawson has been honored four out of six weeks this season with two player of the week designations.
Lawson posted his Big 12-leading sixth double-double with a season-high 28 points and 12 rebounds in KU’s 74-71 win against No. 17/16 Villanova. He shot 66.7% (10-for-15) from the field and 77.8% (7-of-9) from the free throw line. With 20.1 ppg and 10.8 rpg, he is one of just four players nationally to average 20 points and 10 rebounds.
